Installing Artificial Turf Before (and During) Sacramento's Rainy Season

Short answer: Yes, artificial turf can be installed during Sacramento's rainy season. What changes is the calendar. Storms push installs back, so the homeowners who book earlier get the dry days first.

Here is what actually happens when you install turf in the fall and winter, and how to plan for it.

Why rain matters for an install

The turf itself doesn't care about rain. The ground under it does. Every install we do follows the same 10-step process, and the most important steps happen before any turf is rolled out:

  • Digging out the old lawn. Soaked soil is heavy, sticky and slow to remove.
  • Building the base. We lay road base in layers and compact each one. Base can't be compacted properly over saturated ground, so we wait for it to firm up instead of rushing it.
  • Grading for drainage. The base is shaped so water moves away from your house. That only works if it's built on stable ground.

That is why we don't install in a downpour. A base built on mud is the most common reason turf sinks, ripples or puddles a year later. We would rather move your date a few days than build it wrong. If you want to see why the base matters so much, read our sub-base guide.

What a winter install looks like

Sacramento's rain usually comes in storms with dry stretches in between. Our crews work those dry windows. A typical yard still takes under a working week once we start, depending on size and scope.

If a storm hits mid-job, we protect the work that's done, pause, and pick back up when the ground allows. You'll hear from our office about any change to your schedule.

Why homeowners book in the fall

  • No more mud season. Dogs and kids track mud in all winter on a bare or dead lawn. A turf yard on a proper base drains, so the yard stays usable between storms.
  • The calendar fills up. Every storm pushes installs back for everyone. Booked earlier means scheduled sooner.
  • Done before spring. When the weather turns, your yard is already finished instead of waiting in the spring rush.
  • Ready for the holidays. A clean, finished yard when family comes over.

How to plan your install

  1. See your price first. Our installed prices are published on the pricing page, with a calculator for a quick ballpark.
  2. Get your free estimate. We come out, measure, show you samples and give you a written price.
  3. Lock in a date. Once you sign, you're on the install calendar. A deposit of 10% of your contract, up to $1,000, holds your date and is applied to your total.

Financing is available for qualified buyers. See our financing page for terms.

Common questions

Can you install turf in the winter in Sacramento?

Yes. We install year-round and work around storms. Rain affects when we can build the base, not whether turf can go in.

Will rain delay my install?

It can. If the ground is too wet to compact the base properly, we move your date rather than cut corners. Our office will keep you posted.

How does turf handle Sacramento rain once it's in?

Turf backing is perforated, and a properly built base is graded so water moves through and away. More on that in our post on how turf handles the rainy season.
